I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, “Well, I’ve had it with humanity.”

But I was wrong. I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we’re lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they’re pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, “The good outnumber you, and we always will.”

Pairs Well With…Snow Patrol, Bon Iver, Ra Ra Riot

Ace Reporter is Chris Snyder, a singer-songwriting who dances on the range of bright indie pop and ambient, dark folk songs. The story of Ace Reporter’s debut LP Yearling, due next week, actually begins in 2010 when Snyder truly put his songwriting to the test. His ‘10,000 hours’ was a project that was not only admirable in its effort, but produced at least a couple of excellent tracks in early singles “Untouched and Arrived” and “Bronze”. Snyder tasked himself to record and release a new song everyday for a full year. While the project has already produced a couple of EPs that nicely display the variety of influences that bleed into Ace Reporters music, these LP tracks take off well beyond enhanced demos and this pick-off-the-top mentality is a great way to come up with a really solid record.

It has been great to be able to read so much positive press towards Lord Huron’s 2012 debut LP Lonesome Dreams after geeking out on the Los Angeles folk pop band’s early EPs a couple years back. While a laid back, rootsy influence certainly permeates throughout Lonesome Dreams, it’s the tropical percussive elements and blissed out dynamics that pushes this record over the top. That consistent layering of sound adds a level of depth unique to Lord Huron and should make for some exciting SXSW sets come March.

2011 Review: spaced out folk rock from Los Angeles. Lord Huron is an explosion of sound, from calypso percussion to folk guitar to distorted vocal tracks. They are hard band to find comparison, but there seems to be an Animal Collective influence on the vocals and song structures as well as world music leanings in the same light as Yeasayer. Lord Huron combines all of these genres into one uniform and unique sound. I was describing to a friend the other day what I was looking for in bands through this project. Lord Huron’s hybrid approach is exactly what I’m seeking, forming a unique sound while not shy to express their influences. They currently have 2 EPs released, neither of which contains a weak track. It’s amazing to see a band this gelled and talented right out of the gate. I think once Lord Huron releases a full LP they could create some major buzz in 2011.
